* I was out sick the day that the ICA's creative director, Lisa Frieman, presented at our school, so I did some research on the mueseum instead, and I hope that will be alright.
Renowned architect, Steven Holl, had designed VCU's brand new Institute for Contemporary Art. The project, almost a decade in the making, is set to be finished by 2015, and will cost over 35 million dollars. Lisa Frieman, previously the senior curator of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, is the director of the new institute. Frieman hopes that the museum will be a"open place for all walks of life--safe, welcoming, inspiring, and also a place to have fun.
Within the 38,000 square feet of interior space, the ICA will feature 10,000 square feet of flexible exhibition space for art, a 240 space, a sculpture garden, a cafe, and a classroom fit to accommodate up to 35 students. The building is also supposedly envirmentally friendly, using geothermal wells to provide heating and cooling energy for the building, green roofs to absorb storm water, and glass walls designed to diminish heat in the summer and harness it in the winter.
